I think I’ve read every article this week about the “Unbearable Whiteness of Being” that is Girls and I understand every issue about the show. Personally, I could care less about the show. Honestly, I love other things that HBO has had to offer besides programming geared toward young women. I’ve read pieces on Clutch, Womanist Musings, Racialicious, Jezebel…etc etc etc.
I’ve seen clips of the show and I don’t see myself watching it at all. I probably won’t even attempt
to give it a chance because there is nothing that clicked with me from promo to promo. I like watching shows about young women(despite them not looking like me but that is another blog post) in major cities. Whatever was lost from screen to my eyes….I don’t know. It just didn’t seem interesting at all. The show came off as very bland and unfunny. I prefer shows like True Blood, Boardwalk Empire, Big Love, Six Feet Under, etc etc etc.
I guess I could chalk it up to simply not caring about the material. As much as I tried to hop on the Sex and the City bandwagon, I never could. I simply didn’t care about fashion, or Carrie’s bed partners. I did watch it when I was pregnant but it wasn’t something that I felt like I just had to see or that I would miss it when it was gone. When I see the ads for Girls(aka Nepotism lite) I just see another rehashing of SATC for the Hipster set. I feel like a lot of networks don’t want to take a chance on something new without it already coming with a viewer base(i.e. True Blood) so they constantly try to reclaim the magic of shows past.
Girls=Sex and the City
How to Make it in America=Entourage
The River=Lost
GCB= Desperate Housewives
The Cape=Heroes
The Game=Girlfriends
See where I’m going here?
I don’t like being given the old switch when it comes to television. I want to see something new or not based on a book. How many shows can the CW produce from Alloy books? Damn! I know there are some screenwriters(present company included) who would like a shot to present new material.
When it comes down to it I won’t watch Girls because I didn’t watch Sex and the City(religiously) and its nothing more than an all Brunette cast of SATC minus the money and clothes. The CW already has the Carrie Diaries so…Girls can probably hang it up.
